Evolutionary Chronicle - Manas

Manas are large crustaceans which inhabit the coastal areas of Mata Nui and its surrounding oceans, some reaching as far as the eastern coast of Bota Magna and the northern coast of Okoto. Manas are opportunistic omnivores, going anywhere they can to find food without straying too far from the water. Due to their clumsy and heavy forms they are poor hunters; usually, they will go after carrion, weak or injured animals, as well as whatever plants grow in the area. In the water, the Manas are far more agile than on dry land, using their large, padded rear legs to propel themselves through the brine; on land, these large pads are mainly used for shielding, display, and communication within the species. With their thick, spiny armor, Manas have few predators on land, save for Tarakava. In the oceans, far larger monsters await them.

This is probably my favorite Rahi redesign of the bunch. The spiny exoskeleton is excellently done (believe me, I know how difficult drawing that many overlapping parts can be!), the paddle legs are a great concept, and the robust legs are a good, realistic feature for a crustacean of this size. But what I like most is the color scheme; it just reminds me so much of digital camouflage and the blocky, non-organic color scheme of the original toy. You've captured the spirit of the Manas crabs magnificently!

Thank you very much! Creating a plausible-looking animal with the shape and colors of the original set was not easy feat. I'm glad you found it effective.

I can imagine; when I came up with a kaiju based on a model I own (a heavily modified Kardas), I had to diverge pretty wildly from the source material. Bionicle just doesn't lend itself easily to a organic aesthetic, but you've proven that while difficult it can be done.

Is there any chance you'd illustrate more Rahi like this? This series has been fantastic so far.

Thank you. My goal, in the long term, is to illustrate all official Rahi (sets, combiners, and canonized fan-made). Sapient races would come later.

What's the story for these mutants? Will we see more of them in the future?

I'll post the lore behind them soon, and yes.
